Established in 1881 as the Pittsburgh Allegheny and joining the National League in its eight season, the Pittsburgh Pirates played in the inaugural World Series, ultimately laying claim to five World Series championships, as well as nine National League pennants. By 1891, the team had adopted the Pirates moniker after being accused of “piratically” signing second baseman Lou Bierbauer. More than fifty years later, the Bucs were one of the first teams to forego a patriotic color scheme, assuming the signature black and gold they’ve sported ever since.
