Before 1988, the city of Charlotte had never been home to a professional basketball team but that changed when the NBA announced they would be home to the newly formed Hornets. After playing in Charlotte until the end of the 2002 season, the Hornets relocated to New Orleans where they kept the same team name and resumed play at the start of the 2002-03 season. When tragedy struck in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina hitting the shores of Louisiana, the Hornets were forced to move once again, this time to Oklahoma City. Once they were able to, the Hornets returned back to New Orleans in 2007.
