In 1987, it was announced that Minnesota would be granted an NBA franchise for the first time since 1960. Nicknamed the Timberwolves after a fan vote, it was decided that they would begin play during the 1989-90 season. As the young franchise struggled to find its way during its first few seasons, they were soon awarded the fifth pick in the 1995 draft and ultimately decided to select Kevin Garnett. When Garnett was traded in 2007, the team sought out a new face of the franchise and quickly found one when they completed a 2008 draft day trade to acquire Kevin Love from the Memphis Grizzlies.
