The additional game was scheduled at the end of the regular season, pitting the league's two division champions against one another. It was a risk, and many thought this would jeopardize national title aspirations for the schools involved. Instead, one play changed the course of the game and helped shape the future of college football.

- LOLO (Louisiana State University) Story of track & field athlete Lori Lolo Jones (LSU). Favored to win the 100 m hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she tripped on the penultimate hurdle, finishing in seventh place.
